Muay Thai Kickboxing FAQ

What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai, also known as Thai Boxing, originated in Thailand and dates back thousands of years.

The system utilizes punches and kicks, and also incorporates elbows, knees, and grappling techniques. Each part of a Thai fighter´s body is a potentially lethal weapon, making Muay Thai the most brutal of all ring sports. Fights are comprised of five three-minute rounds, with a two-minute rest period in between. Boxing gloves, groin protectors, gum shields, Thai boxing trunks, hand wrappings, and cotton anklets are worn for competition bouts.

In a Muay Thai contest, a fighter can punch and kick an opponent´s legs, body, or head using any part of the leg, knee or elbow.

Although punches can result in a knockout, they do not score high points from Thai judges, who instead look for spectacular performance in attack and defence with the use of kicks, knees, and elbow strikes.

Muay Thai is acknowledged as one of the most effective forms of martial arts. Students participate in Muay Thai for fitness, competition and self-defence. Click here for more information on Muay Thai kickboxing.

Are there classes strictly for beginners?
Yes! Our beginner’s program is set up strictly for beginners and is taught.....designed to build self-confidence, technique, fitness, and co-ordination before the progression to more specialized areas of the art.

Are owning gloves and leg protection essential for the beginner´s class?
No equipment is required for the beginner´s sessions. Once your induction is completed, information will be given as to necessary equipment.

What should I wear?
Anything that is comfortable; we recommend comfortable exercise shorts or bottoms and a t-shirt.

I am not very fit at the moment, so would this be too hard for me?
There are no special fitness requirements to take part in any of our programs. Each program is set up to improve your fitness level, while helping you to achieve a greater sense of awareness and self-confidence. These are the primary aims of our programs.

I have been looking for a place that does a kickboxing course near me for ages and I would love to do it. However, I am only 15 years old, and on the site I noticed it is described as a "program for adults." Will my age be a problem?
The minimum age for participation on the beginner´s kickboxing course is 14 years with parental consent.

Will I have to book in advance to enroll in the course or can I just turn up?
You can turn up on the first day of the course and enroll. However, it is advisable to book in advance because there are only a set number of places available on each course, and last-minute availability is not guaranteed.

Are your classes geared more towards kickboxing as a good cardio workout, as with other programs I have seen?
This is not a cardio kickboxing session; however, fitness circuits are included in the program to condition your body and mind. Our programs will teach you the techniques of Muay Thai kickboxing, i.e., how to execute and block punches, kicks, kneeing and elbowing.
Are your classes taught in a cumulative manner—meaning, do they progress over the years to a high standard?
Our programs are developed so that you progress at a steady pace. For instance, we recommend that you start your training with our beginner´s Thai/kickboxing program, then move on to the Improvers section, and finally hone your skills in the Intermediate/Advanced Thai/kickboxing program—with each advancement made as you see continuous progression.
